What is a pandemic?

• An influenza pandemic occurs when a new strain of influenza virus emerges, spreading around the world and infecting many people at once
• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Swine Flu (H1N1) a global pandemic. The current MOH pandemic status is available on their website below.
• The Ministry of Health works with the health sector and other Government agencies to ensure New Zealand manages the spread of infection and preparedness for future outbreaks.
